Mrs. Eckert
I wish to welcome you to Avon Heritage Elementary School! My name is Mrs. Eckert, and I am delighted to be one of your child's fifth grade teachers. I have worked as a teacher in Avon since 1988. I attended Lorain County Community College and Cleveland State University where I graduated with Honors with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Soon after, I earned my Master's Degree from Ashland University in Curriculum and Instruction. I am certified to teach in grades 1-8, but I believe working in grades 4-6 is the best fit for my strengths, abilities, and interests. I grew up in Avon; however, I now live in Sheffield Village with my husband whom I have been married to for 20 years. We have three children: Mikala, Brian, and Angie--ages 18, 16, and 14.
Fifth grade is a time of higher expectations for students. They are expected to keep an organized agenda recording homework and important announcements, which keeps home/school on the same page. They are responsible for completing more of their own work independently both at school and at home. There is a lot of "learning how to learn" that goes on during the fifth grade year. Students start to learn what it takes for them to be successful; how much practice makes it "stick". I'll try to help them discover their learning style as I lead, not drag, them through the curriculum.
When I'm not teaching, you would probably find me cheering for my family and cousins at sports or concerts, gardening in my yard, playing family games, or hiking in the Metroparks. I am very crafty, loving paper, fabric, and especially yarn crafts!
I love teaching and look forward to caring for, supporting, and encouraging your child daily as we embark on this new fifth grade year together! Please feel free to call me at school at 937-9660 or email me at eckertd@avoneagles.org if you have any questions or concerns.
